The Eight-Byre

Allonby

ALLONBY is situated on the Cumbrian Coast, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. For those who enjoy walking, there are miles of green seabanks and firm sand to walk on, or rock-pools to explore. ‘The Smuggler’s Route’ goes through the village and you can do as much or as little as you want. A wealth of history is to be found in the cobbled back-streets and in the summer there are guided walks around the village.

Being only 30 minutes drive from the Cumbrian lakes and mountains, Allonby makes a great base for walking holidays. The coastal towns of Maryport and Whitehaven are part of our maritime heritage and well worth a visit, as is the Victorian town of Silloth with its magnificent Green and promenade. Carlisle castle and cathedral are just 35 minutes drive away and the Lanes Shopping centre at Carlisle is a pleasant place to shop.

If you don't mind travelling a little further afield, more history can be found on the Roman Wall, which ran from Bowness on Solway heading east through Carlisle and all the way to Walsend on the Northumbrian coast.
